The right mountain sports clothing depends on the activity, altitude, tour duration, intensity and weather. The basic equipment can include base layers, functional tops, a warm layer, a protective outer layer as well as suitable pants and matching accessories.

Good mountain sports clothing supports your body climate, offers freedom of movement and, depending on the model, protects against external influences. Low weight, a small pack size and durable materials are also an advantage on many tours.

First consider which tours you are planning and in which conditions you will be out and about. Terrain, temperature, precipitation, wind, exercise intensity and tour duration determine which features and layers are needed.

Breathable materials let water vapor escape to the outside and thus support a comfortable body climate. How well this works depends on the material, the combination of clothing, the intensity of exercise and the external conditions.

Functional materials can absorb sweat from the skin and transport it to the outside, where the moisture can evaporate faster. For this to work, the layers combined with one another must support moisture transport.

In windy conditions, wind-resistant or windproof jackets can be useful, depending on the intensity. For prolonged rain, a waterproof outer layer is needed. Not every product offers the same weather protection, which is why the respective product details are decisive.

Softshell clothing often combines a high degree of freedom of movement and breathability with a certain amount of protection against wind and light precipitation. Hardshell clothing is designed for reliable protection against wind and rain. Which option makes sense depends on the weather and the intended use.

The Skinfit Layering System combines functional layers of clothing. The base layer supports moisture transport, an additional layer provides warmth as needed and the outer layer protects against wind and weather. The individual layers can be flexibly adapted to the tour, temperature and intensity.

The base layer is worn directly on the skin and supports the transport of moisture to the outside. It should fit close to the body, dry quickly and work well together with the layers worn on top.

A warm layer makes sense in low temperatures, during breaks, in windy conditions or at low exercise intensity. Depending on the conditions, a functional top, a fleece or a light insulated jacket can be used for this.

A hardshell jacket makes sense when prolonged rain, snow or strong wind is to be expected. Even with a stable weather forecast, it can be an important compact protective layer in your backpack on longer or alpine tours.

Mountain pants should offer freedom of movement and suit the terrain and the weather. Depending on the model, durable reinforcements, elastic materials, adjustable leg openings or zip-off legs can be practical. For wet conditions, additional rain pants may be needed.

Weather and temperature can change quickly in the mountains. Light, compactly packable clothing can be carried in your backpack and quickly added when needed without making your equipment unnecessarily heavy.

Depending on the tour, a backpack, performance socks, gloves, a beanie, a headband, neckwear and other accessories can be useful. Here, too, fit, weather, tour duration and the specific product properties should be taken into account.

Many functional products can be used for hiking, mountaineering, climbing, via ferratas or ski touring. Some items, on the other hand, are developed for specific requirements. The intended use and product description are always what count.
